Armenian National Football Team Ex-Coach Heads Romania’s Steaua

Ex-head coach of Armenian National Team and Yerevan’s team Pyunik, Michael Stoykitsa, was appointed head coach of Bucharest’s Steaua this morning. Romanian media announced that at the initiative of Steaua owner Gigi Becali, Stoykitsa substituted Cristiano Bergodi.

Yesterday, in the first round of the European League group stage, Steaua was unable to defeat Moldova’s Sheriff. The match ended with a score of 0-0, after which wealthy Romanian football club owner Becali immediately dismissed the head coach. The dismissal was also based on the fact that Steaua was playing an unsteady match in the start of Romania’s championship.

Michael Stoykitsa, who is well known to Armenian football fans, worked in Armenia from 2003-2004. During that period, the Romanian professional was head coach of the Armenian National Team and of Yerevan’s Pyunik. Stoykitsa was one of the most successful among foreign professionals who worked in Armenia.

During that period, the Armenian team twice defeated North Ireland’s team in 2003, and Pyunik qualified for the second round of Champions’ League.

Recently, Stoykitsa was working with Greece’s AEL.
