The Armenian-Azerbaijani presidential meeting through Russian mediation will enable official Moscow to rehabilitate the OSCE Minsk Group, Fikret Sadykhov, an Azerbaijan-based political scientist, told SalamNews.

"Despite its, frankly speaking, failed activities over the past years, the Minsk Group is still alive. This [meeting] is a means of rehabilitating the Minsk Group and showing the local public, as well as the international community, that the structure is still operating and trying to achieve results in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process," the expert said.

According to him, Russia has played the most active role in this process. Numerous meetings have been held on its initiative, but Moscow-proposed approaches proved unacceptable to Azerbaijan.

"They tell us that the [Nagorno-Karabakh] conflict is the easiest to resolve. At the same time they are expecting concessions from Azerbaijan," the expert said.

He believes the next meeting, which is to be held in Sochi, will be an attempt to bring the conflicting parties' closer. It will not produce any results unless specific proposals are made. "Meeting just to meet cannot produce any results," Sadykhov said.

On the threshold of national elections, Russia which is mediator in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process, is seeking to look a peacemaker in the South Caucasus. "I do not question Russia's sincerity, but the practice of recent years wll not produce any results unless Russia restrains Armenia's aggression," Sadykhov said.

A Russia-mediated Armenian-Azerbaijani presidential meeting is reportedly to be held in Sochi, Russia, Jan. 23 and 24.
