The Prosperous Armenia party (PAP) has not discussed the possibility of adopting a 100% proportional representation system and has no position on the issue, a member has said.

Speaking to Tert.am, Aram Safaryan, a spokesperson for the ruling coalition party, said they will express their views after the parliamentary hearings, when the opinions of the other political forces become known.

“Next to the other political forces’ signature to hold parliamentary hearings, we put ours because the issue has a wide public response and is of interest to large circles of the society,” he said.

Safaryan noted that the PAP’s 2007 electoral program contained a clause on the 100% proportional voting system.

As for the claims why the party did not propose such initiative as early as four month ago, Safaryan said the question was not that urgent then.

“The best we can do today is to join other political forces to enable all the sides to express their opinion,” Safaryan said, not ruling out the possibility of finding other options in case the proposal does not receive a final approval.
