The National Press Club has issued a statement calling on law-enforcement agencies to mitigate the measure on restraint imposed on Haik Gevorgyan, Copy Editor of the Haykakan Zhamanak (Armenian Times) daily.

The Press Club also calls for an unbiased and comprehensive investigation including an examination of reasons for police putting Mr Gevorgyan on a list of wanteds.

The72-hour term of Mr Gevorgyan’s preliminary arrest expires on Monday. The court is to rule either to extend the term or release him.

“The restraint, namely, preliminary arrest, imposed on Haik Gevorgyan is not adequate to charges brought against him. This arouses serious doubts that, in deciding on the restraint, law-enforcers considered his journalistic activities,” says the statement.
