EU has new ideas on Karabakh settlement - diplomat

The European Union wants to propose new ideas to promote a quicker settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan, Ambassador Roland Kobia has said.

"We of course support all objectives of the Minsk Group and we would like also, as a request to the parties, to launch new ideas in order to promote quicker settlement of the conflict," the Azerbaijani news agency Trend has quoted the diplomat as telling reporters.

Kobia said the ideas are still being tested with the governments of Azerbaijan and Armenia, adding that they will be disclosed in the near future.

The diplomat further stressed the importance of enhancing people-to-people contacts and building confidence between the conflicting parties.
Kobia added that EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus Philippe Lefort visited Azerbaijan on Monday to meet with the country’s president, with foreign, interior and justice ministers and other officials.

He further referred to the EU foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton’s statement reiterating EU’s willingness to have a more active in the conflict settlement efforts.
