Aramyants hospital on the edge of collapse in Georgia

A hospital founded by outstanding Armenian industrialist and philanthropist Mikael Aramyants (1843-1924) is on the edge of collapse in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi.

Aramyants’ contribution to the development and improvement of his favorite Tiflis (now Tbilisi) is invaluable. He was widely respected by residents of the town. One of his good deeds was the foundation of magnificent hospital of that time in Armenian Havlabar district of the Georgian capital, Russian Armenians Yerkramas newspaper reports.

His outstanding services were highly assessed by the authorities of Tiflis who granted him title of honorable citizen of the town.

The construction of the hospital started in 1903 and ended in 1909. The building was designed by a well-known architect from Tiflis Pavel Zurabyan (1874-1942). Aramyants invited highly skilled specialists to work in the hospital.

The hospital was never officially called Aramyants’ hospital, though people were calling it in that way from the very beginning. Unfortunately, the current Georgian authorities have no wish to value the services of the people, in particular Armenians, rendering truly invaluable service to their capital.

The hospital’s building is partially destroyed. Georgia’s authorities are planning to establish  a medical center on its place to be named after Zubalashvili brothers  – well-known Georgian sponsors – Armenian-Catholics Zubalovs turned into Georgians. The current building does not satisfy them. “Aramyants time has ended and he will finally be forgotten,” Georgians are telling to Armenians. “If you wish to build its duplicate in Akhtala transport the bricks of the hospital there and assemble it from the start,” they say.

In 2011 the hospital’s building was sold to a Russian entrepreneur of Indian decent Daniel Gupta who wanted to conserve the building and only reconstruct it, but the Georgian authorities convinced him to demolish the building and build something pompous in European style.
