The Syrian government has completely emptied Ghnemiye village, not far from Latakia port city, mainly populated with Christians, including Armenians.

Many Syrian-Armenians have villas and lands there. The authorities claim it has been done to ensure security of the population.

Armenian St. Gevorg church is operating in Ghnemiye. The church too has lands in the village.

A representative from the Armenian community told Tert.am the population of the village has fully been evacuated with only three people left. The majority of them have been taken to Latakia or Armenian-populated Aleppo.

According to official data, there are 60-80 thousand Armenians in Syria, the majority of who are living in Aleppo. There are Armenians in capital Damascus, Latakia, Deir ez Dzor. Small number of Armenians lives in Homs. Earlier it was reported that Syrian armed opposition activists occupied the Armenian church of Homs turning it into a hospital. The Armenians are reported to have left the town.

The Armenian community suffered four losses since the clashes in Syria.
