US analyst on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

Alex Jackson, an analyst at the London-based political consultancy and analyses center Menas Associate, considers that the chances for settling the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict very limited for this year.

In an interview with News.az, the expert said that the poor relationship between Tehran and Baku are unlikely to change the regional situation much.

“Azerbaijan has recently expressed its frustrations with the West’s failure to assist it over Nagorno-Karabakh, despite Azerbaijan’s pro-western orientation which has created tensions with Iran. But although Baku threatened to change its pro-Western orientation over this, in reality it has few other choices. Aligning with Iran or Russia would not solve Azerbaijan’s problems or deliver it the international respect and foreign investment it needs.

So although the tension between Baku and Tehran reflects Azerbaijan’s geopolitical alignment with the West, it is unlikely to change much. Azerbaijan has few other reliable options,” he siad

The regional implications of a poor relationship between Tehran and Baku are actually quite limited. Although Iran is likely to reinforce its support for Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh, Iran has been doing this for twenty years anyway.
