Angela Merkel to attend Germany-Greece match

18:31 • 20.06.12

The German government has announced that Chancellor Angela Merkel will travel to Poland to watch Germany's quarterfinal match against Greece in the Euro 2012 championship finals, the international service of RFE/RL reported.||

The match is scheduled for June 22 in the Polish city of Gdansk.

The Germany-Greece match is seen as having a political aspect because Merkel is scorned by some Greeks for being a driving force behind European Union and International Monetary Fund demands that debt-crippled Greece implement unpopular austerity measures in exchange for international bailouts worth some 240 million euros.

The game with Greece will be the first that Merkel has attended at Euro 2012.
