The Turkish authorities have promised to restore a demolished Armenian chapel in Malatia Province.

According to Haberler.com, the construction, pulled down negligently on February 2, will be rebuilt in the near future.

The municipal authorities' move had earlier met wide resistance by the local Armenians and the civil society. The reason was reportedly the Turkish population’s protest against the construction of an Armenian church.


Malatya Mayor Ahmet Cakir said the chapel was leveled through misunderstanding.

A project submitted to the Malatia Municipality suggested that the construction should be 6m high, but after it was complete, its height turned out to be even more (7.5m). The city hall reportedly wanted to dismantle that additional part, but the team of constructors working on the territory had “misunderstood” their task and leveled the entire building.
