Baroness Emma Nicholson ready discuss May 6 elections report with Armenia’s authorities

The Group of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (CE) began its work with listening to a brief report by Baroness Emma Nicholson, who was head of the monitoring group at the May 6 parliamentary elections in Armenia.
Naira Zohrabyan (Prosperous Armenia Party – PAP), who is an ALDE member, informed Tert.am that Baroness Emma Nicholson noted Armenia’s government political majority would not accept her report. However, she is ready to thoroughly discuss her report with Armenia’s authorities during her visit to the country next week.
Hermine Naghdalyan, a member of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), disagrees with the assessments contained in the report.
In this context, Naira Zohrabyan presented the joint headquarters’ statement.
She noted that the PAP raised the problems later mentioned in the report both during the election campaign and on the election day.
Naira Zohrabyan also put the following question to Sali Berisha, Prime Minister of Albania (the country is now chairing the PACE Committee of Ministers): Serbia did not recognize Kosovo’s independence. However, it started a dialogue with Kosovo. So what is the Albanian premier going to do to persuade Azerbaijan to start a dialogue with Nagorno-Karabakh?
However, Mrs Zohrabyan did not receive a clear answer. The Albanian premier spoke of the establishment of democracy in the region and need for a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
At his press conference, PACE President Jean-Claude Mignon, in response to an Armenian journalist’s question, voiced his personal opinion saying that the PACE Subcommittee on Nagorno-Karabakh should not be re-established. On the other hand, he stressed that it is up to the PACE Bureau to make a final decision on the matter.
Mrs Zohrabyan also intends to raise the problem of Azerbaijan’s provocations on the Armenian-Azerbaijan border, which claim human lives.
