European Council President calls for peaceful settlement of Karabakh conflict

16:36 • 05.07.12

Karabakh conflict has no military solution, with only negotiated peaceful settlement able to change the status quo and lead the region to secure and prosperous future, President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy said at a joint news conference in Baku with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.

“Armenia and Azerbaijan are to make a decision that will be based on Madrid principles. The two countries should implement their commitments assumed within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group,” he said.

He also stressed the necessity of maintaining the ceasefire regime and called for restraint, urging to avoid using military rhetoric.

“For reaching solution, it is necessary to entertain mutual trust and respect. I have repeated the same in Yerevan,” Rompuy said.
