Zhoghovurd: Cassation court ruling to create difficulties for media
09:28 • 13.07.12

A recent precedential ruling by the Armenia’s Cassation Court is thought to have created new difficulties for the media.
According to the paper, the ruling, which applies to the charges of defamation and libel, aims to bring closed sources and media outlets under the authorities’ full control, posing a threat to freedom of speech.
The Court has reportedly identified two concepts of an information source based on the degree of appropriateness. The ruling suggests that anyone giving a journalist information (be it though reliable) in a confidential manner is an inappropriate source as opposed to a person who reported the same news in a public manner, says the paper.
It notes that journalists will have difficulty communicating with close sources, facing a restriction on the right to freedom of speech.
