Polish deputy seeks 400-year-old loan repayment from Spain

A deputy of the Polish Parliament Marek Poznanski has sent to the government for consideration a bill, according to which Warsaw should demand from Madrid repayment of a loan, issued more than 400 years ago, The Voice of Russia reported.

In the mid-16th century Polish Queen Bona Sforza lent Spanish King Philip II 430,000 gold ducats for the war for the kingdom of Naples.

According to Poznanski’s estimates, each coin approximately weighed 3.5 grams of gold. The total amount of the loan, in terms of today’s single European currency, would amount to 57.4 million euros.

"I understand that my request may seem strange, but I am governed by a desire to demonstrate to contemporary politicians the consequences of lending to foreign countries" - said Poznanski.
