A plentiful meteor shower called Perseids will be viewed in the night of August 12. Speaking to Tert.am, astronomer Areg Mikayelyan said it is connected with meteorite stream.

The shower is visible from mid-July each year, with the peak in activity being between August 9 and 14, depending on the particular location of the stream. During the peak, the rate of meteors reaches 60 or more per hour.

Hitting the atmosphere at speeds of almost 100,000 miles (160,000 kilometers) an hour, the meteors burn up and produce streaks of light that each last just a fraction of a second.

Areg Mikayelyan said the majority of meteorites does not reach the Earth though in case of being big they may reach it. He said the traces of meteorites are better seen on the Moon.
 

He said because of illumination in Yerevan it will be hard to follow the meteor shower but outside of the capital it will be possible to see 60-100 meteorites.
