Armenian Greco-Roman wrestlers to keep fighting for gold medal

The chief coach of Armenia’s Greco-Roman wrestling team is hopeful his sportsmen will be able to win gold medals in future championships.

Speaking at a news conference on Monday, Levon Julfalakyan said the team hasn’t given up the idea of bringing a gold medal to Armenia in future, despite the results of London 2012 which gave it only silver and bronze medals.

He noted that the sportsmen always brought medals in the past four years, ranking among the top ten teams in all championships.

The London Olympics saw two Armenian Greco-Roman wrestlers, Arsen Julfalakyan and Artur Alexanyan, winning silver and bronze medals, respectively.

“We have to train batter in the next four-year period, correcting all the mistakes and working more properly. The team is to take part in the European Cup championship in October and the Armenian championship in November,” he said.

Gevorg Alexanyan, a world-class trainer also attending the news conference, spoke of coaches’ errors in Olympic championships.

“There were, certainly, errors by coaches, but they were few in number and not intentional. The competitions were very good compared to World Cup games,” he said.

Julfalakyan noted in turn that wrestling today has become somewhat similar to court tennis.

“A wrestler can become an occasional winner, without resorting to any trick. A sportsman is too much pressed for time to commit any error. You do not manage to exhaust your rival in 1.5 minutes and attempt a trick. While we used to do our best to earn 12 points in the past, one point today can be enough for a victory,” he said, adding that wrestling often suffers because of the new rules.
