President calls for efforts to assist Syrian-Armenians
President Serzh Sargsyan expressed concerns over the situation of Syrian-Armenians at a meeting with the government members on Saturday.
He particularly said that the developments in the Middle East and the Arab countries are mutually linked with Armenia’s interests.
“This moment really poses a test for the Syrian-Armenians. This situation is our open wound and our top concern of every day. We live side by side and have passed a long way together. Syria’s grief is our grief. What happens in the Middle East and the Arab states is directly and mutually linked to our national security,” the president said, adding that Armenia is very eager to see existing situation calm down.
He then stressed the Armenian government bodies’ role in assisting in the country's peace efforts.
“Armenia’s government offices have a special role at the moment. It is very important for the Armenian state bodies, especially the foreign office, the Ministries of Diaspora and Territorial Administration, the Police, the National Security Service and other competent authorities, to work promptly and in a coordinated manner to be able to react adequately and make decisions in the current situation,” Sargsyan said.
The president particularly called upon the government officials to give maximum attention to the compatriots from Syria, providing necessary assistance under the circumstances. He further attached a major importance to the recently taken urgent measures to relax the visas and asked for following the smooth implementation of the facilitated procedures.
“The security of the Syrian-Armenians is in the limelight of our diplomatic efforts. The situation changes very quickly, and we follow all the developments, evaluating the emerging risks and trying to react with maximum promptness. In the context of future developments, we must be ready to provide maximum support to the Syrian-Armenians, regardless of their decision. Both those coming to Armenia and those choosing to stay in Syria should equally feel that we are with them whatever they decide. We must permanently plan our steps, having in view all possible scenarios. So I expect specific results in this direction too,” Sargsyan added.
Summing up, the president stressed that Armenia must be next to its compatriots in any world corner and convey to them its warmth and compassion whenever physical proximity is impossible.
