Today marks the 56th  birth anniversary of Flora Martirosyan, the legendary Armenian folk singer, who died in the United States in November.

Born in Armenia’s second largest city Gyumri, Martirosyan received her initial musical education at the Armen Tigranyan musical school. She later moved to Yerevan to pursue a professional degree at the Komitas State Conservatory.

Martirosyan won her first international award in the Hamburg International Festival in 1978. The song Tsovastghik (author: Gusan Ashot) which brought the singer a great fame, was recognized as a top song for 15 years. Martirosyan performed guest concerts in over 60 countries around the world.

The singer married in 1989. She has two children.

Martirosyan’s family moved to the United States in 1991 and was back to Armenia four years later. Martirosyan continued her career in music in her native city. From 1997 until 2001 she was the principal of the Armen Tigranyan Musical school.

Back to Los Angeles in 2002, she founded three musical schools named after Komitas in the cities of Los Angeles and Burbank. The initiative brought the merited singer a great fame within a short period.

In 2006 and 2007, Martirosyan organized the pan-Armenian international festival Komitas in Yerevan, bringing together around 2,000 children from Armenia and other states.

Also in 2007, the singer founded the Artists for Peace Charity Foundation which attracted a large number of world-renowned singers and Hollywood superstars who joined under the slogan "Never Again" to raise their voice of protest against genocides.

Her solo concert in Glendale later in the year saw poet and musician Michael Stone, the brother of Holywood superstar Sharon Stone, deliver a speech. Stone and other Holywood stars performed at the event.

In 2011, the Los Angeles Gibson Hall hosted the first concert with the participation of Steevie Wonder, Boby Brown and others.

Martirosyan died in Los Angeles on November 20, 2012. Complications of a gallbladder surgery are thought to be the cause of her decease.
