Armenia to pay political cost for EEU economic benefits – Alexander Arzumanyan
In an interview with Tert.am, Armenia’s ex-FM Alexander Arzumanyan said that even if Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) promises economic benefits to Armenia, the country will pay political cost instead – Armenia’s isolation along with Russia.
According to him, the EEU has no future, and Armenia should prepare all the documents it will need immediately after the EEU’s disintegration.
“I insist that this is not a political process. Rather, it is a megaproject of Russia’s imperial ambitions, which, for some reasons, independently of us and due to independent policy by Kazakhstan and Belarus, caused the political component to be essentially reduced, with the economic component preserved. However, it does not mean Russia has dropped its political claims. And the fact that the Committee on Economic Affairs has been appointed as ad hoc committee to deal with the treaty (because we know that it is the Committee on Foreign Relations that normally discusses any loan agreements) is one more attempt to show the public it is allegedly a serious economic issue. But I can say we are going to be forced to serve the political interests of Russia and that union in our international relations. And further similar attempts should be expected. At any international forum Russia, which is in growing opposition to the civilized world, will face condemnatory resolutions and statements, and Armenia will have to come against the international community’s civilized positions. First, it will be a play with our rating. Secondly, they will not any longer be a reliable partner for our western partners, thereby reducing the possibilities of attracting investments and expanding bilateral relations.”
As regards the statements on Armenia’s further cooperation with the European Union (EU) under the Association Agreement, Mr Arzumanyan said:
“It would be perfect if our European partners agreed to sign at least the political part of the document and outlined a possible economic package. Regrettably, our European partners are delaying. But the negotiations are going on and I think that both Europe and Armenia are interested in getting a document. Time will show how they are going to harmonize the document later. And since I stick to the opinion that the EEU has no future, Armenia should prepare all the documents it will need immediately after the EEU’s disintegration.”
As regards the possibility of EU revising the visa facilitation agreement and EU member-states’ embassies imposing stricter Schengen visa requirements, Mr Arzumanyan said:
“I do not forecast any stricter visa requirements. The issues are regulated by Armenia’s agreements with EU member-states. I think the EU member-states are interested in expanding scientific and cultural ties thereby promoting integration.”
