USD appreciation and its effect on Armenia’s tourist industry: opinions
Armenia has entered the winter tourism season.
Representatives of Armenia’s tourist industry think it is too early to make any forecasts, but they are sure that the USD appreciation against the Armenian dram will affect outgoing tourists.
“If a person travels abroad, the purchasing power parity exchange rate is lower. So we have imported services, and a higher import price in USD terms does not create favorable conditions,” Mekhak Apresyan, Head of the Tourism Department, Ministry of Economy, told Tert.am.
According to him, exchange fluctuations will not affect in-country tourism. A number of factors should be considered. If the exchange rate fluctuations cause a price rise, USD and Euro prices will remain unchanged.
As to the Armenian tourist industry’s offers, the official said:
“The recent years’ tendency shows that tourists come to Armenia to see the New Year in here. Armenia has developed its different infrastructures and diversified services. And it is more interesting to enjoy such holidays in Armenia. More guesthouses and other facilities are operating in Armenia’s regions as well.”
In the context of winter season, Mr Apresyan singles out Armenia’s resort town of Tsakhadzor.
“Besides downhill skiing facilities, we have cross-country skiing facilities in Ashotsk. Armenia offers ample opportunities for alpine sports,” the official said.
Therefore, tourists come to Armenia in winter as well.
“So we are holding discussions with the private sector to make winter tourism in Armenia more attractive,” Mr Apresyan said.
He also pointed out a developed infrastructure and personnel problem and the problem of better presentation of winter tourism in Armenia.
“Relevant work is being done now and results can be seen. But the work needs to be consistent to produce better results.”
Mr Apresyan reported a 10% year-on-year increase in the number of tourists, with a 5% increase during the winter season.
Rector of the Armenian Institute of Tourism Robert Minasyan believes that the USD appreciation against the Armenian dram will affect outgoing tourists.
“Yes, it will affect everyone, but let us hope it will be temporary,” he told Tert.am.
According to him, tickets for Moscow-Yerevan flights have shown a 30% decline in price this year, which will make it easier for people to come to Armenia.
As to what should be done to develop winter tourism in Armenia, Mr Minasyan said that a great deal has been done for that. Armenia has created necessary conditions for tourists to enjoy physical training.
“I cannot say we have perfect conditions. Of course, we have problems to solve. But I do not think that winter tourism will continue developing in Armenia.”
