‘Let them talk’ program fails: opinions on reasons
TV-presenter Andrey Malakhov, who hosts ‘Let Them Talk’ (Russian: Пусть говорят) talk show on Channel One of the Russian television, arrived in Armenia on January 18, when 6-month-old Seryozha Avetisyan, the only survivor in the Avetisyan family murder in Gyumri, on January 12, was still struggling for life.
Mr Malakhov visited the baby in hospital and then went to Gyumri. A number of well-known Armenian public figures went to Moscow with Mr Malakhov to prepare a TV program, but it was cancelled after little Seryozha’s death was reported.
In an interview with Tert.am, lawyer Alexander Sirunyan, political engineer Karen Kocharyan and MP of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) Khosrov Harutyunyan explained the reasons why a talk show was not broadcast.
Mr Sirunyan said that the program was cancelled just minutes after Seryozha Avetisyan’s death.
“While we were waiting for the program, Malakhov came and told us that the baby had died and the TV management decided to cancel the program as untimely,” he said.
The Armenian representatives had not been told it was going to be a program about the baby. The lawyers had prepared to speak of Valeri Permyakov’s transfer, expected trial and similar issues.
“The format of the program had to be different, and we had actually to think of what to do and say to behave in the right way.”
According to him, the reason why the program was cancelled was that Mr Malakhov and the TV channel management held different opinions. Even the Russian side was mainly represented by Armenians, and they were expected to be of the same opinion, which aroused the TV channel management’s concern.
“That is, all of us would have talked, and the opposite side would not have been able to present its opinion, which proved a reason why the program was canceled,” Mr Sirunyan said.
Political engineer Karen Kocharyan told Tert.am that the child’s death was the only reason why the program was canceled.
In his turn, Mr Harurtyunyan said that the program was to present the details to Russian public and put forward the argument that it is everyone’s duty to take care about the child and his future.
“But the program was to be focused on the survivor child. After he died, there was nothing to do,” he said.
Mr Harutyunyan was supposed to present the great tragedy to Russian public. He was to urge the Russian side to hand Valeri Permyakov over to Armenia.
“We had a talk with Mr Malakhov and I told him that the perception of Armenian-Russian relations in Armenia could be seriously affected unless the Russian side responded adequately, including handing Permyakov over to Armenia,” the MP said.
Andrey Malakhov deeply felt the tragedy and was ready to transfer some money from his personal savings to the Avetisyans’ relatives.
Besides the people that arrived in Moscow from Armenia, the Russian side was to have been represented by Margarita Simonyan, Chief Editor of the Russia Today TV channel, film director Tigran Keosayan, singer Roksana Babayan and others.
