Robert John Walter must revise title of his report – Davit Babayan
If Mr Robert John Walter, a British MP at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), does not change the title of his report “Escalation of Violence in Nagorno-Karabakh and Other Occupied Territories of Azerbaijan”, he would rather not come to Nagorno-Karabakh, Davit Babayan, Spokesman for the President of Nagorno-Karabakh, told Tert.am.
“If he does not change his philosophy, we are not going to cooperate with this person. And if he does not make a revision, it means he is executing Azerbaijan’s order. In this case, he had better cooperate with Azerbaijan as well. We said that such a text of the report would mean it had been written at Azerbaijan’s foreign office or presidential administration,” Mr Babayan said.
Vice-Speaker of Armenia’s Parliament and Head of the Armenian delegation to PACE Hermine Naghdalyan told the Haykakan Zhamanak (Armenian Time) newspaper that the British MP plans a visit to Armenia this May.
“He applied as a PACE delegate, as a British MP visiting the region. We will probably receive Mr Walter though our decision against cooperation under the report remains in force,” she said.
According to Mr Babayan, Mr Walter himself must announce a new title of and changes in the report.
“If Armenian FM Edward Nalbandian states Mr Walter is coming to Armenia, we expect changes in his approaches, philosophy and title of his report. This is what is needed for an unbiased report rather than a political order,” Mr Babayan said.
If Mr Walter considers Nagorno-Karabakh an occupied territory or part of Azerbaijan, let him enter Nagorno-Karabakh through Azerbaijan. This is logical and he must understand what is possible and what is not.
“Are we to forget the blood of our martyrs for an official having contacts with certain states to arrive here? Are we to forget our Constitution, statehood, soldiers defending our borders for fear of a scandal? No scandal is going to break. Rather, it is going to be a disgrace if we swallow all this,” Mr Babayan said.
Vahan Badasyan, crossbencher in the Nagorno-Karabakh Parliament, told Tert.am that a British MP should not be allowed to arrive in Nagorno-Karabakh to prepare such a report.
“How can he speak of violence? He has no right to nor can he do it. We too can form a commission and prepare a report on violence in England, on territories occupied by England – Scotland, Ireland.”
