Genocide recognition is an act of peace, says Francois Hollande
France’s president reiterated his country’s support to the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide as he delivered a speech at the centenary commemoration event in Yerevan.
Francois Hollande noted that the word “genocide” was first used to refer to the WWI-era killings of the Armenians after it came into use in 1944.
He said that France was among the countries that hosted Armenian survivors who had narrowly escaped the murders and carried sad memories as their only property. “They were in search of a new homeland,” he said, noting further that Armenians also became defenders of France, battling against Nazi Germany during World War II and later contributing to the country’s revival and prosperity.
“They all are French as much as they are Armenians, as they united the country [in the person of such as celebrity as] Charles Aznavour, who is our joint pride,” he added.
The French leader noted that his country has many monuments eternalizing the Genocide victims, with the statue of Komitas, the father of Armenian music (erected in the center of Paris) , being one of them.
“We also understand that genocide, as a word to refer to the extermination of the 1.5 million Armenians, was – if we are allowed to say – invented,” he said, noting that France legally recognized the tragic crime in 2001.
“This law proclaims an obvious reality: it condemns the facts that were condemned by historians long ago, but this doesn’t mark an end to their efforts. The 2001 law is a necessary act of truth,” he said, considering it a respectable measure that conform to the French values of not condemning the present for past sins.
Mr Hollande said that his country continues the fight against denial, condemning it as an act towards repeating a crime.
He added that France never discriminates between tragedies, condemning all kinds of massacres, regardless of place and time.
“France is always there to counteract,” he said, referring further to the mass killings in Middle East and the hazards facing the ethnic minorities in the region. The French leader said he finds barbaric acts by terrorists a threat to the joint heritage, as they are also aimed at erasing the past.
“It is very important to be in Yerevan here to make calls for the protection of all minorities, especially the Christians in the East. We are obliged to demonstrate our solidarity and support. France does not teach lessons, but it know what the obligation of history is,” hhe said, adding that commemorating the Genocide implies recognizing a tragedy that targeted humanity ad hence to rule out its repetition it future. “Commemoration was a duty and obligation to awaken memories, pay respect of memory and transfer it to future generations,” he said.
Mr Hollande said that his country offers its contribution to reconciliation efforts, considering recollection a tool aimed at promoting peace and progress, instead of splitting people. “The 100th anniversary is a call for peace and reconciliation. There are important words in Turkey, which have been voiced, yet there are also words that are still waiting to be heard. And they are very important for alleviating the pain,” he said.
Mr Hollande further expressed a desire and hope for opening the Armenia-Turkey border. He also remembered Hrant Dink, the assassinated editor of the Istanbul based bilingual Armenian weekly Agos.
“I would like to reaffirm France’s commitment to do all its best to continue the efforts towards finding peace. This is Yerevan’s message: peace and only peace to all. The recognition of the Armenian Genocide is an act of peace,” he added.
