Unity first step towards reaching Genocide recognition - minister
The unity between the nation and state, which Armenia saw at the Genocide commemoration events last week, is only the first step in the continuing campaign towards reaching a recognition by Turkey, says the diaspora minister.
“I think that the entire nation, together with the state – [Nagorno-]Karabakh, Republic of Armenia and Diaspora – were unanimous and extremely organized. I am confident that it will continue, as that’s only one stage. We will put the full stop once we see Turkey admits and recognizes the Armenian Genocide. Turkey cannot but take into account the powerful Armenian nation,” Hranush Hakobyan told Tert.am.
The minister said she saw the nation’s potential make itself apparent in the past days as the Armenians around the world held remembrance events in memory of the victims. “We, as a nation, are very great and powerful. There are 10 million of us; if we add to that the 2 million Islamized Armenians in Turkey, then there is a 12 million nation they [Turks] have to get square with. Turkey saw that by dealing with the 3 million [population of] Armenia it practically deals with 12 million Armenians,” Hakobyan added.
Commenting further in the commemoration events, the minister characterized them as a major achievement towards achieving an international recognition. “I think we had a big achievement on the state level as we were joined by high-ranking officials and representatives from more than 60 countries and four presidents. For those who didn’t come, [their absence] doesn’t imply that they do not recognize the Genocide; it’s another matter that they have economic and different other interests with Turkey,” she said, recommending that those countries, as well the international organization that haven’t yet recognized the Genocide, stop the policy of denial.
“But my desire is to simply ask all the organization and states which are Turkophile and pro-Turkish to advise Turkey on the timeliness of recognition, because the Armenians are not going to remain silent. And Turkey will see its reputation decrease by every year instead of increasing; that’s the first thing to say. And secondly, they have to advise their favorite Turkey to save the money it spends on denying and distorting [facts] because the world no longer believes it,” the minister added.
