Armenian Genocide centenary as seen by Turkish journalist
Hürriyet reporter Cansu Çamlıbel, who attended events marking the Armenian Genocide centenary in Armenia and had an exclusive interview with Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, shares her impressions.
In speaking of April 24 eight or ten years ago, Turkish journalists used such phrases as “the so-called genocide” or “unfounded genocide claims.” However, “football diplomacy” between Ankara and Yerevan in 2008 was followed by more neutral phrases, such as “1915 remembrance day.”
Although frozen, the process of establishing diplomatic relations has had its impact on journalese.
“The Genocide Museum has numerous pictures telling about the year 1915. And the pictures of Armenians and their deported from Anatolia produce an even more painful impression,” Ms Çamlıbel writes.
She points out that, with the latest resolutions considered, 24 states, four international organizations and 43 of the 50 US states have to date recognized the Armenian Genocide.
The Turkish journalists attended the Genocide centennial events upon the invitation of the Hrant Dink Foundation.
Çamlıbel further shares her impressions of the ceremony of canonizing the Armenian Genocide victims and the System of a Down rock band's concert in central Yerevan.
She describes the visit to the Genocide Museum-Institute as the most sensitive moment during the trip, noting that as early as 10-15 years ago, the Turkish TV channels would shoot a special broadcast about every single Turkish journalist who visited the place. "And this time too, the attitude was special", she says, adding that the museum’s director, Hayk Demoyan, accompanied her as she was touring the halls.
“The moment I came to think that the photos outnumbered the records, Hayk Demoyan takes out the document signed by Enver Pasha [Ottoman minister of war] from the folder. It was the decree for bestowing a military award upon Sargis Torosyan, an Armenian officer who served in the Turkish army.
“Demoyan says Enver Pasha did not spare even a Turkish family to prevent their exile. The document in Demoyan’s hand has not and cannot be available to ordinary Armenian citizens. And that bears witness to kind of [rich] archive the museum possesses.
“Ten minutes later, Demoyan exposes another document. It is in the Ottoman language; about the seizure of an Armenian’s property,”
“ “You see, we manage to achieve certain things without opening Turkey’s archives,’ he says.
“I ask, ‘Where did you get them from?’ ‘I cannot mention the source. It’s a special document.’
“We know they had called upon the diaspora to submitt all the documents to archives,” writes the journalist.
