Recognition of Armenian Genocide, right to demand should be viewed separately - Khachatur Kokobelyan
Recognition of the Armenian Genocide and the right to demand should be viewed separately, Chairman of the Free Democrats party, crossbencher Khachatur Kokobelyan told Tert.am.
“Armenia should from now on be consistent in having the Armenian Genocide considered as a legal problem by ally nations. However, the right to demand must never be high on the state policy agenda for the following reason: by raising the issue of territorial or other claims we will impede the process of legal recognition of Armenian Genocide,” he said.
On the other hand, the descendants of Genocide survivors should not ignore their right to property.
“It does not mean that diasporic Armenians whose right to property was violated or the church that has a legal right to land property should not be consistent in getting restored to their right to property. That is, we should be able to separate the two,” Mr Kokobelyan said.
Turkey is afraid of facing its own history in the context of this problem as well.
“I think that Turkey keeps on refusing to admit the atrocities committed by its predecessors for the following two reasons. First, admission will cause a psychological problem for Turkey, and in implementing its policy it avoids facing this problem. This is the real reason for Turkish government officials’ mutually exclusive statements, which run counter to the civilized world’s [set of values]. Secondly, they are afraid of legal consequences. Therefore, I do not think that it would be right to raise the issue of territorial claims,” Mr Kokobelyan said.
Speaking of the April 24 events, the crossbencher said:
“Our task was not only to inform the world, but also to create an atmosphere of harmony with all the civilized states and societies struggling against denialism and recognize the first genocide against Armenians in the 20th century.”
Further steps must be aimed at having the Armenian Genocide recognized by the United Nations and Turkey.
Mr Kokobelyan hopes Germany will recognize the Armenian Genocide as well.
Asked if Turkey must apologize to the Armenians for the Armenian Genocide, Mr Kokobelyan said:
“You can never force anyone make decisions in your own interests. You should be able to bring your interests to conformity with other nations’ interests. And consistent process of recognition of the Armenian Genocide by especially EU member-states makes Turkey embark on the way to self-isolation, with inevitable results in the context of admission of the Armenian Genocide by Turkey itself. Further steps can only be made after this stage,” Mr Kokobelyan said.
