Nepal quake: Towns near epicentre 'devastated' - Red Cross
Towns and villages near the epicentre of Saturday's earthquake in central Nepal have suffered "almost total devastation", the BBC reports quoting the Red Cross as saying.
Assessment teams say they have found survivors in a "desperate situation".
More than 6,000 people are now known to have died in the 7.8-magnitude quake but the fate of thousands more in many remote areas remains unknown.
The government has warned that the death toll could rise to more than 10,000.
Although rescue teams from Nepal and the international community are operating in the capital Kathmandu and the surrounding area, landslides and poor weather have hampered efforts to reach isolated districts.
Emergency aid has also yet to reach many of the worst-hit areas, six days after the quake hit.
There was some good news on Thursday when a 15-year-old boy and a woman in her 20s were pulled from the wreckage of two collapsed buildings in Kathmandu.
But the BBC's Sanjoy Majumder in the city says there is growing anger at the government's response to the disaster, with a number of protests breaking out.
"Six Red Cross assessment teams are reporting that some towns and villages in the worst-affected districts close to the epicentre have suffered almost total devastation," the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) said in a statement.
One of the worst-affected areas was the Sindupalchowk region, north-east of Kathmandu, it added.
"One of our teams that returned from Chautara in Sindupalchowk district reported that 90% of the homes are destroyed," said Jagan Chapagain, head of IFRC's Asia Pacific division.
"The hospital has collapsed, and people are digging through the rubble with their hands in the hope that they might find family members who are still alive."
He added: "We can expect the situation to be the same if not worse in many other places where aid has not yet been delivered."
Up to 40,000 homes are believed to have been destroyed in Sindupalchowk, the IFRC said.
The World Health Organization estimated on Thursday that about 1,400 people had been killed there.
Also late on Thursday, the government said the death toll had risen to 6,130 dead and 13,827 injured.
Meanwhile, the search for survivors is continuing.
On Thursday, 15-year-old Pemba Lama and a woman named as Krishna were pulled from the wreckage of two separate buildings in Kathmandu.
Pemba said he had survived five days in the rubble by drinking water from wet clothes and eating clarified butter. He said he had heard other survivors in the building calling out.
Krishna was trapped alongside three dead bodies in a building not far away.
Shortages of food and water in the capital have forced thousands of workers to board buses and flee to their home towns and villages.
A lack of buses and the slow distribution of aid have led to clashes between protesters and riot police.
