Hraparak: Amnesty hopes not fading away
After two months of active discussions, the reports about amnesty are said to be high again on the Armenian authorities’ agenda.
Citing its sources, the paper says that there is a decision to realize the long-awaited plan on the occasion of the May 28 First Republic Day. But the authorities have been reportedly been instructed to keep silence over the plan. The penitentiary institutions too, are said to be actively discussing the topic. The paper says that sources close to the Presidential Administration had earlier ruled out the reported plan, citing the short time interval as an argument behind the inexpediency of a new amnesty (the latest presidential amnesty was declared back in 2013 on the occasion of the Armenia’s 22nd independence anniversary). “The amnesty kicked up a great fuss. So it has to be an unexpected and surprise decision,” a source has told the paper, implicitly blaming the media for publicity.
The paper refers to earlier reports hinting the authorities’ plan to declare an amnesty ahead of the April 24 Genocide centennial but adds that the detention of the Founding Parliament members derailed all the plans.
