Russia spares no effort to promote peace over Karabakh - lawmaker
Russia, as a co-chairing country of the OSCE Minsk Group, spares no effort to achieve a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, a Russian parliament member has said, commenting on a recent statement by the country’s foreign minister.
According to Boris Reznik, a member of the ruling United Russia faction in the State Duma, such a statement, which Sergey Lavrov made at a meeting with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov (that the country collaborates with the other co-chairing states of the mission, as well as Armenia and Azerbaijan to reach a common agreement) may pave the way to a solution to the lasting land dispute.
Speaking to Tert.am, the Russian lawmaker said he finds that the kind of statement could really serve as a found solution.
“Russia maintains diplomatic ties with both Armenia and Azerbaijan, so as the negotiations go on, it tries to find crossing point in an effort to offer options for for a mutual concession. If Lavrov has said that he hopes for a progress, then diplomatic channels have probably attained a tangible result in trying to find solutions. As to what options were found, I cannot say it now, as I have no information on that.”
Asked whether Azerbaijan hasn’t changed its position on the conflict settlement process, Mr Reznik replied, “Neither Armenia nor Azerbaijan want radical changes. Only compromise and solutions are possible.”
Mammadyarov, who met with Mr Lavrov in the course of a recent visit to Moscow, was invited also to attend the exhibition “Russia Arms Expo” by his Azerbaijani counterpart. Asked whether that could imply that Russia might sell a new batch of weapons to Azerbaijan, Mr Reznik said he doesn’t think that such a deal – even if concluded – would pose any threat to Armenia.
“Russia is Armenia’s security guarantor. So even if Russia sells a new batch of weapons to Azerbaijan, that doesn’t mean at all that Russia will stop fulfilling its commitments. We keep the situation under control, [attentive to] every bullet and other parts of the sold weapons. So no need at all to make the situation more dramatic than it really is,” he said, adding that Azerbaijan can buy arms supplies practically from any state.
“Wouldn’t it be better if Azerbaijan purchased weapons from us – instead of a third country - so that we could know what we have sold and how much and thus keep the situation under control?” Mr Rezin asked.
