Dink murder: Court release nine police officers detained in probe
The Istanbul 2nd Penal Court of Peace has released nine police officers who were detained by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office as part of an investigation into the 2007 killing of Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, Today’s Zaman reported.
Former Istanbul Police Department intelligence unit Police Chief Ahmet Ilhan Guler was among those detained on Wednesday. However, Guler was released later on the same day after being questioned at the prosecutor's office, while the other suspects were referred to the court on Wednesday evening. The court then released all of the suspects after hearing their testimonies late on Wednesday.
The detentions came after National Police Department Police Chief Engin Dinch, who was the head of the
Trabzon Police Department's intelligence unit head at the time of Dink's murder, said in his recent testimony to the Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office that his former unit had sent intelligence about a possible attempt on Dink's life to the Istanbul Police Department in February 2006.
Among the other detained officers are former Istanbul Police Department intelligence unit deputy Police Chief Choshkun Chakar, former Trabzon Police Department intelligence unit Police Chief Faruk Sarı, two police chiefs from the National Police Department's intelligence unit -- Bülent Demirel, Osman Gülbel and Yilmaz Angin - and police officers Onur Karakaya and Mehmet Ayhan.
Dink was shot by 17-year-old Ogün Samast on Jan. 19, 2007 in front of the office of the Agos magazine, where he worked as editor-in-chief. In January 2012, Samast was sentenced to 22 years, 10 months in prison by a juvenile court and another court ruled for life imprisonment for Yasin Hayal on charges of instigating the murder. Another suspect, Erhan Tuncel, was acquitted of murder charges.
In May 2013, the Supreme Court of Appeals overturned the court's original ruling, which dismissed the involvement of an organized criminal network in the case. The lower court, which found no evidence that a terrorist organization was involved in Samast's assassination of Dink in 2007, had acquitted the suspects of claims that they had formed a terrorist organization. The court did, however, say they were guilty of forming an illegal and armed organization to commit a crime, prohibited under Article 220 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK).
This decision paved the way for the trial of public officials on charges of voluntary manslaughter and a retrial started in September 2014. Evidence discovered since then has led to claims that the murder was linked to the “deep state,” a term that refers to a shadowy group of military and civilian bureaucrats in Turkey believed to have links with organized crime.
