We want to assume our historical responsibility for Armenians – German lawmaker
Ahead of the German legislators' debate over the Armenian Genocide resolution, Tert.am has conducted an exclusive interview with Martin Petgold, a member of the Christian Democratic Union in Bundestag.
The draft resolution on recognizing the Armenian Genocide is going to be put to vote on June 2. The bill was excluded from the agenda last year after the German government’s intervention. Do you think it will be adopted this time or will the German government intervene again?
This motion on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide is an important matter to the parliamentary groups of CDU/CSU, SPD and the Green Party for reconciling nations. It is important to us not only for critically reprocessing the role of the German Empire during, but also because we want to be of help in bettering the foreign relations between Armenia and Turkey.
What benefit do you think Armenian Genocide recognition will offer to Germany as a country?
The Federal Republic of Germany stands up for its special moral and historic responsibility for the 20th century. Consequentially, we also want to assume our historical responsibility for the Armenian people.
It is obvious that if the bill is adopted, there will be problems in the relations between Turkey and Germany. It sounds from the lips of Erdoghan and pro-Turkish organizations in Germany. It is stated that it can also be dangerous, because Germany has the biggest community of Turks, and the society may face problems. What do you think about that? Is there any danger? How are you going to overcome these challenges?
Since the beginning of this debate, it was foreseeable that several Turkish communities would raise their critical voice against the Genocide recognition in Gemrany. Nevertheless, Germany has to recognize those events as genocide and it is also important that we handle this debate responsibly and accordingly. As elected parliamentarians, it is therefore our job to explain this resolution to all people who are living in Germany.
And us I have already said, the initiative to recognize the Armenian Genocide isn’t welcomed by the Turkish authorities. Turkey’s ambassador in Germany announced that it will be the country’s “historic mistake”.
What kind of processes do you expect in the relations between Turkey and Germany, and Turkey and EU after the recognition?
Personally I do not treat the recognition of the Genocide as a “historic mistake”; moreover, see it as a historic chance for reconciliation, especially in our times, when many different ethnic and religious groups are fighting against each other in the Middle East. We need to deal with our history with discernment! The awareness of one’s moral responsibility of one’s history is indispensable for every member state of the EU and every applicant country. For that matter, I strongly believe that Germany will always strive for a solution-oriented approach in the upcoming negotiations.
