Azerbaijan seeking peace over Karabakh after April war – political analyst

15:15 • 10.01.17

Since the war last April, Azerbaijan has been seeking to calm down the situation in the conflict zone, political analyst Alexander Iskandaryan told reporters on Tuesday as he commented upon the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs’ statement on Azerbaijan’s attempted incursion into the Armenian territory on December 29, 2016.

"I wouldn’t attach a serious significance to that. I don’t see any risk of a proactive military operation by Azerbaijan,” he said.

Asked by Tert.am whether he expects a more active role by the countries co-chairing the OSCE Minsk Group, Iskandaryan ruled out the possibility of major changes. “I think the sides will try to maintain the status quo. The tools of influence will not essentially change, but their sizes may. Azerbaijan used to be a completely different state, not almost subject to any influence. Whenever they give something to Armenia, they demand something else in return,” he added.

The analyst said he treats the Minsk Group as an absolutely perfect format to deal with the conflict settlement process. “The Minsk Group, comprising France, the United States and Russia, has its influence on the problem; yet it is also important to have in mind that Nagorno-Karabakh is not all the time under their spotlight. They all have more important issues to deal with. In theory, however, the United States and Russia, as well as the NATO have the necessary armed forces to resolve the problem if they want to. But the number of such problems around the world reaches almost five dozen, so I don’t think anybody will take a plane to fly here for that,” he added.
