Armenia parliamentary elections: serious political stake expected

This January will see formation of new alliances, political figure Azat Arshakyan told Tert.am.

According to him, this year will see serious political stakes, the upcoming parliamentary elections being the reason.

Developments have been noticed since last autumn.

“Last autumn was very interesting in political terms in contrast to previous stagnation,” Mr Arshakyan said.

He points out expected fierce competition between political forces prior to the parliamentary elections. However, since the situation remains uncertain, political forces are cautious as the alliance could join and their competition could affect further cooperation.

“Rivalry is being delayed as there is no polarization yet,” Mr Arshakyan said.

It is not yet clear what programs the political forces have beside their seeking power.

Mr Arshakyan predicts a different political spectrum because the Kremlin has not sufficient resources to influence Armenia’s domestic life.

With respect to the authorities’ potential, Mr Arshakyan said that they need external support.

“The political opposition is showing signs of changes, while the authorities remain silent as they do not know their further steps.”
