Defense minister announces new projects to boost military education

Armenia’s minister of defense on Thursday unveiled plans for launching two new programs in military education.

In a speech at the “Nation Army - 2017”  conference (initiated in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Science) Vigen Sargsyan highlighted the importance of military-patriotic education which he said is gaining urgency in light of the increasing challenges in global and regional politics.

“Military-patriotic education is a widely discussed topic on the global level today; the problems we are facing vary in range due to our geopolitical position and the existing challenges, and also the fact that we have many communities whose residents stand up for [their fatherland’s] defense like border guards,” he said.

As real groundwork for building the vision of future, the minister stressed the importance of consistent and concerted efforts, and good knowledge of history.

“The first project, which is conventionally entitled ‘I Have the Honor’, is aimed at promoting new interest in the officer’s profession. The ideology proposes linking university deferment to future service as officer. Any young student of an accredited higher educational institution is entitled to apply for the program,” Sargsyan said.

The second program, “It’s Me”, is aimed at encouraging all those young men’s efforts who made independently their decision to serve in frontline defense posts.

“The conscripts willing to serve in military units holding vigil will be entitled to contractual service for a specific period,” he said, adding that three years is the intended timeframe.

Upon completion of the proposed service, the young men will be awarded 5 million Armenian Drams (approx US $ 10,000) as compensation allowing them to purchase apartments, launch their own farming industry or pay tuition, Sargsyan added.
