Situation on Karabakh frontline prone to changes – opinion

The situation in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone can change within seconds, as the tensions still continue after the recent hostilities, a film director who recently returned from the country said today.

Speaking at a news conference, Arshak Zakaryan attributed the instabilities to the Azerbaijani authorities’ attempts to ‘play shows’ for the domestic audience by speculating the killing of civilians.

“Azerbaijan is just trying to demonstrate that they are doing something; they are searching for vulnerable points in an attempt to inflict damage on us,” he said, blaming the country's military for the death of a woman and a two-year-old child in the frontline offensives.

“It might be due to their negligence as they deploy the artillery in villages. They might have shot from another defense position; nothing is ruled out. Our troops never target villages. We have very many positions close to villages , which are very convenient, but we never use them.”

Zakaryan ruled out the possibility of positive developments under conditions of untargeted statements by the international mediators and Azerbaijan’s refusal to deploy ceasefire monitoring mechanisms along the Line of Contact.

“Armenia long ago agreed [to the proposal] to have those mechanisms in place, while Azerbaijan rejects them. It is now for the international communityt to ask why they reject them in essence. If the Armenians are really responsible for the violationts, why do we avoid it then?,” he asked.

Zakaryan said he knows that the Armenian side has installed video recording devices fixing the truce breaches. “I feel really happy that the Armenian armed forces have opted for the policy of destroying the firing posts. So it is important to keep it up,” he added.

Commenting on the recently held military exercises in Azerbaijan, Zakaryan said he thinks that the country is now trying to ramp up its military potential after losing a “top-class regiment” in the four-day war last April.

“They now need new troops capable of using the equipment [President Ilham] Aliyev purchases. Their army is not efficient; their [soldiers] 18-19 years of age are not able to fight. They are food for powder. So this is why they conduct military exercises to use those tanks, ” said the director.
