Nagorno-Karabakh still on the path to building more victories – politician

12:24 • 02.09.17

Twenty-six years after gaining independence, Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) is still facing the challenge to build more victories to resolve a range of actual problems, also unrelated to the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, says an Artsakh-based politician.

Eduard Atabekyan, an opposition MP who heads the Movement 88 faction in the country’s National Assembly, cites two key approaches preventing the long-lasting land dispute from being eventually resolved with the international community’s assistance. “On the one hand, we face the difficulty of convincing the international community of the truthfulness of something, and on the other hand, there is the real understanding by the people in Artsakh that they must uphold the victory gained at the price of heavy blood,” he said in comments to Tert.am.

Nagorno-Karabakh adopted its Declaration of Independence in a parliamentary session on September 2, 1991, three days after the Azerbaijani authorities announced their intention to gain independence from the USSR. In a nation-wide referendum held on December 10, 99% of people (out of the 80% of the voting-age population who headed to polls) voted in favor of independence.

Addressing the achievements and ommissions over the past years, Aghabekyan said he doesn't think that the country has managed to realize its full potential and honor the memory of those who sacrificed their lives for the country's freedom (to enable their society and future generations to reach the high well-being standards which they enjoy today).

“We haven’t, unfortunately, reached that level today as our calls for independence never eventually translated into a way of living for the entire Armenian nation,” he said.

The politician, who was formerly the mayor of capital Stepanakert, also highlighted the existing social gaps and defense-related problems, noting that the status of the liberated regions remains unresolved for so many years after the heavy battles.

The politician further regretted to note that the initially outlined vision to unite Arttsakh with Armenia remains still unfeasible despite the great desire by the people in the two Armenian republics to realize the idea. "Today, the people of Artsakh discharge their duty of building their own lives with honor,” he said.
