Armenian Government has all the resources to boost agriculture, says prime minister

14:51 • 08.11.17

Armenian Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan on Wednesday announced a government plan to raise the country’s agricultural output by using the available resources and potential.

“We have set an objective to raise the agricultural productivity and have all the necessary preconditions to ensure [the desired outcome] by using modern technologies, developing high-value agriculture, replacing the imports and expanding the geopgraphy, as well as improving the conditions for entrepreneurs in the agricultural sector,” he said in an opening speech at the annual international conference Hayagroforum.

The premier called attention also to food security issues which he said are now under a special spotlight.

“Objectively evaluating the situation today, we have to admit that we are facing also numerous problems requiring a solution on our path towards developing the agriculture,” he said, highlighting especially the existing concerns over a poor irrigation system, zoning, uncultivated land areas, low productivity and efficiency, etc.

According to Karapetyan, the government has already invested the necessary efforts towards ensuring competitiveness, profitability and a sustainably developing institutional economy.

The premier said they have also outlined the framework of agricultural assistance programs proposing steps to develop the sector by attracting modern technologies and raising efficiency. He reminded the participants of affordable credit programs allowing potential beneficiaries to rent agricultural equipment, launch anti-hail networks and drip irrigations systems at a 2% interest rate based on government subsidies offering also flexible payoff timeframes.

“Our activities will be ongoing and in line with the demand. We will time and again discuss together both the existing problems, and possible ways towards development. This is the logic nowadays – the state and the private sector must collaborate painstakingly to develop this sector, which is really of utmost importance to us all,” Karapetyan said, stressing the need of revising the standard methods to achieve positive changes.
