Armenian children 'can make their country a better place', says American writer (photos)
Sharon Draper, a renowned modern American writer and teacher, says she feels very proud that her books are gaining an increasing popularity across the globe, becoming accessible to many readers in different countries.
The Armenian translation of her short story “The Noisy Silence” was presented in Yerevan on Thursday in a ceremony attended also by the author, a multiple recipient of the Coretta Scott King Book Awards.
Famed as a bestseller of the New York Times, "The Noisy Silence" tells the reader about a child named Melody, who has a physical impairment. Unable to either speaker or walk, she is depicted as a smart character who from time to time runs out of temper because of the physical restriction not allowing her to express her feelings and emotions. But she turns out to have an inner talent enabling her to finally speak out; Melody has a voice, but not all people hear and are ready to listen to her.
Speaking to Tert.am, the author said she dedicated the short story to her daughter who also has a disability but is not identified with the main hero. Draper said she invented her hero after having studied many children with disabilities and observing differences in their behaviors and emotions.
“There are a vast differences between them. Stories become universal for children after being heard from their mouths. People make different conclusions as they read,” she said.
Despite the originally intended target audience of children as old as 11, the book recognizes no age limts as it may be of interest also to adults, says the author.
The "Noise of Silence" has touched many hearts, causing readers to share their impressions with lots of other people and urge them to read the short story.
“Children in many schools read my book. And this is really a good reason for me to feel proud,” said the American author.
The Noise of Silence is accessible to Armenian children thanks to the US Embassy which initiated its translation into Armenian as part of the assistance to the government's inclusive education program. The Embassy also organized Draper’s visit to the country.
The author is full of belief that her work can fundamentally change attitudes in the schools of Armenia. She said she was highly impressed by her meetings with Armenian children as “they reflect the future of Armenia and are ready to change the country to make it a better place”.
