EU-Armenia agreement 'ambitious deal' - deputy FM

14:24 • 01.12.17

After two years of negotiations, European and Union Armenia eventually concluded an ambitious document expected to expnd the framework of cooperation, a deputy foreign minister said Friday.

In a speech at the National Assembly, Karen Nazaryan appreciated especially the mutual willingness and strong efforts towards fostering cooperation.

“The EU is among our trade and political partners, so the calendar of our relations remains rather full today. The past period was marked by an intensive mutual cooperation with Brussels and other European capitals, high-ranking mutual visits, and political consultations. The new framework agreement dominated the agenda of our working meetings. Those discussions ran parallel with the negotiations over the Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement, which was finalized this February and which, as you remember, was declared by the presidents of the EU Council. After the initialing of the texts in March, the parties embarked on a long-running scrutiny,” he said.

Nazaryan also reminded the parliamet of the recent years' phasal processes which he said were permanently under a close spotlight by the society, experts and diplomatic circles.

“Thus before the official launch of the talks, we got the dialogue underway in Brussels in 2014 to outline the structure of the agreement laying the legal foundations of our bilateral relations, and the objectives, and the sides' key approaches in relation to the document. Later, in 2015, the Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga welcomed the arrangements outlining the agreement's frameworks aiming to develop a comprehensive cooperation between Yerevan and Brussels in areas of mutual interest. In October the same year, the EU Council approved the negotiation mandate in Luxemburg, and as early as in December, the Armenian foreign minister and the EU high representative announced the official launch of the negotiations over the agreement,” the official added.

He noted that the process saw an active engagement by not only the Foreign Ministry of Armenia but also different other government agencies.

“At the Eastern Partnership summit in Brussels last week, President Serzh Sargsyan characterized the new agreement as a comprehensive document reflecting the recent significant developments in the EU-Armenia cooperation and outlining the necessary guidelines  for their further deepening. We can rightfully insist today that we have now reached an agreement whose implementation will be an extremely important step towards broadening the framework of our cooperation with the EU,” he said.
