Turkey seeks to provoke tensions with neighbors instead of normalizing ties– expert
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Greece does not absolutely signal any attempt to normalize the Turkish-Greek relations, according to Ruben Melkonyan, the dean of the Yerevan State University's Oriental Studies Department.
“Erdogan’s visit exacerbated - instead of changing - the anti-Greek sentiments,” he said in an interview with Tert.am.
In a recent analytical article, The Guardian described Erdogan’s move as groundbreaking, noting that it was the first visit by a Turkish leader to the country in the past 65 years.
Agreeing that the visit was really of interest, Melkonyan noted that the Turkish leader appeared with tough statements before his trip.
He highlighted certain accentuations in Erdogan’s speech, particularly his reference to the Treaty of Lausanne. “What he said first was that the Treaty of Lausanne needed a close reconsideration given that many realities were inaccurately reflected there. The second accentuation was intended for the domestic audience, its message being the fact that the the treaty was not absolutely a victory but rather implied concessions on the part of Turkey. That really gives ground to concern given that the Turkish leader addresses a treaty [concluded] about 100 years ago; so such kind of territorial concessions are simply impermissible today,” Melkonyan said.
Meantime, he admitted that Erdogan’s anti-Greek stance has been part and parcel of the Turkish politics in the past couple of years. He noted that despite being NATO member states, the two countries kept maintaining conflicting relations.
“I don’t think we can expect anything in the Greek-Turkish relations, as the two countries’ societies have historically a kind of antipathy for each other. I believe the Greek-Turkish relations fit into the logic of forced neighborhood and diplomatic relations,” he added.
According to Melkonyan, Turkey has deteriorated its relations with all its neighbors under Erdogan’s rule, and despite the continuing diplomatic ties with world countries, it has adopted a kind of aggressive and hostile attitude to many of them. “This is the scenario sketched by Turkey’s Erdogan, so their foreign policy objectives fit into the attempts of provoking conflicts and gaining dividends instead of resolving problems with neighbors. So Turkey’s foreign policy, which is considered aggressive as it is, is unlikely to see essential changes after [Erdogan’s] visit to Greece, so it will continue being perceived as a non-constructive policy by the international circles,” he said.
