No practical steps undertaken to export Iranian gas through Armenia – expert

13:55 • 09.01.18

Despite being repeatedly raised to the agenda, the plan for making Armenia a transit route for exporting the Iranian natural gas to Georgia is not finalized for now, as no practical steps have been undertaken to organize the process, according to an expert.

“The issue time and again dominated the agenda of talks by high-ranking official delegations, but no serious dynamics is so far observed. Though it has been frequently discussed over the past months, with the increasing number of interested parties signaling that we are closer to the target, I do not see any final realistic solution for now,” Karen Mkrtchyan, an Iranian studies specialist from the analytical and research center Arevelk (East), told a news conference on Tuesday.

Deputy Oil Minister of Iran Hamid Reza Araghi (also Managing Director of National Iranian Gas Company) recently spoke of the plan, dropping hints that it is still on the agenda.

Mkrtchyan highlighted the social, economic and political advantages of the project which he said would essentially make the country internationally more attractive.

“But the fact that the issue is still under discussion is already an obstacle; I think its high time we translated the process into reality. Those discussions are theoretical nonetheless, with no practical efforts being visible.”

Another contributing factor, the expert added, is the international investors’ activity.

“The political tension in the region will, some way or another, have its reflection on international investors, i.e. – the businessmen who may demonstrate certain passivity, considering the imminent risks, but that doesn’t mean the entire project is going to fail. I think there will be certain disruptions and protractions – and this is why the project is being discussed – but we may as well expect positive developments,” Mkrtchyan noted.

The expert said he also believes that Iran is now drawing serious conclusions, especially in the light of the Second West Asia Conference (which will logically focus on the recent developments in the country). He cited the Iranian deputy foreign minister’s recent statement blaming foreign superpowers for masterminding the anti-government demonstrations in an attempt provoke instabilities.
