No serious cooperation between our private sectors - head of Iran-Armenia Chamber of Commerce

11:15 • 14.02.18

Despite the positively developing political dialogue between Iran and Armenia, the two countries’ economic relations are far from being perfect, with the private sectors failing to treat each other seriously enough to boost the bilateral partnership, says the president of the Iran-Armenia Chamber of Commerce.

“Many goods which are manufactured in Armenia have a sufficiently high quality; yet their value is estimated in accordance with Armenian standards. The same goes for Iran; many high-quality products match the European standards, but their values is ‘Iranian’ so to speak.

“Also, Armenia and Iran maintain very positive relations in the banking sector; anyway, these countries are not practically able to export their goods. Why? Because, they do not seriously treat each other,” Hervik Yarijanyan told

As a serious factor potentially increasing the trade turnover, he highlighted Armenia’s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union, which he said may boost cooperation in both the long- and short-term perspectives.

“Regretfully though, we haven’t reached the desired outcomes over the past 24 years since the launch of the Chamber,” he noted.

But Yarijanyan praised the inter-governmental dialogue, citing the Natural Gas for Electricity project as a successful example of cooperation.

Agreeing that the Armenian expert circles' general attitude to Iran (as a closed market) complicates the trade relations, he said he nonetheless sees real chances fpr developing an effective partnership.

“The development sector, for example, is highly advanced in Iran, whereas in Armenia, the jewelry industries are developed. So we can consider mutual cooperation on these issues. Also the Chambers of Commerce may let the two countries’ governments know of cooperation plans in the respective areas. Once we establish mutual cooperation, we can no longer say the markets are closed,” Yarijanyan noted.

He also praised the idea of the recently launched free trade zone in Meghri (Vayots Dzror region), agreeing at the same time that free economic relations are possible to develop even without that opportunity.

“We should look upon it as just a tool. The important thing for us is to develop the necessary capacities to expand the cooperation by using that component,” he added.

According to Yarijanyan, the two countries’ Chambers of Commerce invest sufficiently serious efforts towards boosting the economic relations.

“I don’t think it is good at all that neither Iran nor Armenia are able to benefit from the existing opportunities - despite the two countries’ considerable efforts towards establishing close ties between our peoples. Anyway, the private sectors do not treat each other absolutely seriously,” he added.
