Armenophobia ‘part and parcel of Azerbaijan’s foreign policy’ – Armenian official
The policy of hatred and Armenophobia has become an integral part of Azerbaijan’s domestic and foreign policies, according to a deputy foreign minister of Armenia.
In a speech at a parliament committee hearing, dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Sumgait pogroms, Shavarsh Kocharyan highlighted also the detrimental effects of the policy line on that country's public consciousness. He said that despite the long-standing violence and aggression, the people of Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) managed to build their statehood over the past decades, gaining sovereignty and independence.
“The time marked an unprecedented period of unity, revealing the unbreakable will and strength of the Armenians. Three decades ago, the Armenians of Artsakh stood up for their right to living safely in their own homeland and determining their own fate to create their own set of values of state-building and development. But this very period thirty years ago symbolizes also one of the darkest chapters in our history, as the Azerbaijani authorities reacted to all this by a wave of anti-Armenian massacres in an attempt to silence the Armenians of Artsakh,” he said.
Kocharyan noted that the public demonstrations in capital Stepanakert mounted the wave of violence in Sumgait, and other Armenian-populated cities and towns of Azerbaijan.
“Azerbaijan’s policies have seen no changes over the past 30 years. We eye-witnessed that in 2012, when they returned home, and gave a hero’s welcome to, [Ramil] Safarov, [the Azerbaijani officer] who had axe-killed Gurgen Margaryan [in Budapest]. Later [in 2016], the four-day April war broke out, opening the international community’s eyes to the caveman-style policy of hatred instilled in the Azerbaijani society to target both civilians and prisoners of war. Opposing the calls for preparing the societies for peace, the Azerbaijani authorities still stick to their belligerent and maximalist policies,” Kocharyan said, blaming the country’s government for the continuing stall in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace processes.
In his words, the international partners have developed the proper understanding that South Caucasus will continue facing peace, stability and security hazards unless Azerbaijan abandons its policy of hatred.
“Committed to the goals and objectives of the Karabakh movement, we will keep relying on our unity abroad - and on the international platforms - to impose peace upon Azerbaijan and to rule out the possibility of more Sumgait-style massacres, achieving the international recognition of Artssakh and guaranteeing the Armenians’ security and prosperity in the region,” the deputy minister added
