Armenian oligarchs had no influence on 'velvet revolution', Pashinyan tells German TV channel

15:40 • 30.05.18

The civic campaign that led to a power transition in Armenia was too strong and consolidated to be influenced by oligarchs, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in a recent interview.

Speaking to a correspondent of Deutsche Welle Russian, the premier also reiterated his cabinet's strong commitment to guarantee the rule of a democratically elected government  (as opposed to specific groups pursuing narrowly individual interests).

Pashinyan said their major task is to initiate drastic reforms to change the political system.

He added that the popular campaign, which saw poeple firmly holding power in their hands, prevented the oligarchy from changing the political situation.

Asked to comment on Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's somewhat neutral stance on the developments, the prime minister replied, “Armenia is Armenia; what makes our country unique is, I believe, predominantly the fact that we treat our government with a high degree of deference,” he said.

“Armenia is a peaceful country; we are a peace-loving people. So I am hopeful you haven’t ever observed any aggressiveness, for instance, against the European Union, United States, Iran, Georgia and other countries. We are certainly capable of protecting ourselves whenever necessary. But we maintain also close relations with Russia, and I am confident they will deepen further. Also, we intend to develop our relations with the US, Iran, Georgia and  all the interested countries,” he added.

Asked to comment on his impressions from the recent EEU summit and the Russian president, Pashinyan said he would evaluate the overall atmosphere as very pleasant.

“I believe we maintain very good personal relations for this particular phase,” the premier said, expressing hope also for a better partnership in the future.

He added that the talks with President Putin had not focused on Armenia’s future policies with other foreign states. “We talked only about the Armenian-Russian relations and the multilateral relations in the frameworks of the EEU and the Collective Security Treaty Organization. But we did not talk of issues addressing the Armenia-EU relations, or the relations with the US or third countries.”

The premier also commented upon the social media’s role in the revolutionary developments.

“In the period of my political activity, and the protests, the TV channels were practically closed for the opposition. It is very important to have an alternative channel to communicate with the people. My public profile on Facebook now has a considerably big audience comparable to that of TV channels. It is a very effective means of communication with the society and the citizens. So Facebook did certainly play a big role in the period of this revolution,” he added.
