Pashinyan 'politically inclined to peer-to-peer dialogue’ – diplomat
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s political behavior is anchored on the logic of a peer-to-peer dialogue, according Arman Navasardyan, a retired Armenian ambassador.
At a news conference on Monday, he shared his high evaluation of the premier’s trip to Brussels and his participation in the NATO summit as a major foreign policy achievement - if not a diplomatic breakthrough - promising a balance between the Russian and western vectors. He also stressed the importance of the meetings held on the sidelines of the international event.
“I consider Pashinyan’s meetings with the leaders very important given the great sympathy for, and interest in, Armenia by the international community and [especially] European leaders. This is a historic chance which Pashinyan uses very successfully,” the diplomat noted.
He also highly appreciated the “correct approach” to the issue, which he said "will hopefully help avoid complicating Armenia’s relationship with Russia”. But the diplomat admitted that a specific segment of the Russian society is inclined to deteriorate the bilateral partnership.
“I believe the political practice which our current government has opted for (as opposed to the former authorities) will eventually yield its [positive] outcomes. This is a new model in international relations, especially by a country like Armenia – which pleasantly surprises the world, evoking also respect,” he said, highlighting the important role of legitimacy and democracy as indispensable contributing conditions to success on the international arena.
Commenting on the recent developments in the Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) peace talks, the ambassador said he doesn’t expect any progress in the negotiations. As for Georgia’s NATO membership plan, Navasardyan hesitated to predict specific timeframes for its realization in the nearest future.
He also addressed the regional integrity issues. “The question we need to raise first should deal with the territories which Armenia has lost. We do not have anything to hand over to Azerbaijan which has itself seized our lands,” the diplomat added.
