Trump-Putin summit ‘good restraint’ for powers capitalizing on conflicts – debate
The recent summit between the US and Russian leaders had a restraining effect on powers which capitalized on interstate disagreements as an opportunity in their policy-building, according to Aram Sargsyan, the leader of the Democratic Party of Armenia.
At a news conference on Wednesday, the politician described Donald Trump’s meeting with President Vladimir Putin as very a interesting and unique dialogue to which he said the United States' reaction would be very important as a signal to future foreign policy changes. Meantime he admitted that the country’s population is in a state of revolt after Trump’s opposition to the globalists.
“Trump decided to wage a war with the globalists, so it is definitely a reaction to that as the globalists saw him setting aside the ideological discord in an attempt to resolve a global issue dealing with world security. Trump said that the two countries - the United States and Russia - possess 90% of the word’s nuclear weapons, his statement virtually implying a mutual consent over plans to restrain global capitalism,” he added.
Sargsyan said he also believes that the presidential summit opened a new path to diplomacy in kind of “mixed wood”. He highlighted Trump’s somewhat coarse behavior at the meetings with European countries, noting instead that his talks with the Russian leader reminded of a peer-to peer dialogue with a politician whom the US president had earlier called a ‘competitor’.
“Also in terms of our region I think, it would help restrain all the parties who pursued plans to capitalize on those disagreements. So no wonder that the Turkish leader departed to Ukraine [after the NATO summit] and met with [President Pedro] Poroshenko to say that they do not recognize Crimea as a Russian territory. That idea demonstrates that Turkey has fallen into despair. Additionally, the Turkish-Azerbaijani ‘united state’ project fell flat as the meeting affected also those plans,” Sargsyan noted.
Mher Shahgeldyan, the Rule of Law party’s deputy leader (also attending the debate), shared the politician’s expectations about the possible changes, describing the Putin-Trump summit as a good opportunity paving way to a future effective dialogue. Shahgeldyan said he also expects the current positive atmosphere to have its influence on future political developments.
“That virtually created an atmosphere for a peaceful and safe political dialogue. Notwithstanding the criticism – which is absolutely logical in the light of the conflict of interests between two elites – Trump, as a representative of the elite, is more pragmatic to better understand what the world needs in essence,” he added.
Shahgeldyan said he thinks that the two state leaders also took the chance to agree on local problems. “There is an agreement which will help increase peace in the region given that a formal platform was created to promote a closer collaboration in observance of the safety norms. I am confident that this approach will affect also the Minsk Group, which practically is a platform of a dialogue between the United States and Russia,” he added.
Shahgeldyan noted that the agreements reached also curbed the Turkish-Azerbaijani policy building ambitions by capitalizing on ostensibly real disagreements. He said he seriously hopes that the meeting will cause Turkey to revise its territorial claims on Nakicevan.
