Yerevan: Bus fare hike protesters meet police resistance as they want to put up tent outside City Hall (video, updated)
The youth activists, who have been protesting since last week against the Yerevan municipality’s decision to hike the public transport fares, are now planning to put up tents in front of the City Hall.
Our correspondent reports from the scene that more and more people are joining the sit-in to dispute the lawfulness of the controversial measure which was reversed a day before entry into force.
Deputy Chief of Yerevan Police Valery Osikyan has ruled out the possibility of allowing the group to pitch a tent on the territory. He said none of the activists have applied to the City Hall for such permission.
“They can put up tents - ten instead of one - in case of obtaining permission,” he told Tert.am.
The protesters are waiting for the crowd to grow thicker to realize their plan. Mini tents made of colored papers have been placed on the grass-covered lands outside the building.
Despite the police ban the activists persist in their efforts to put up a bigger tent.
