Anti-corruption efforts will be top priority, says would-be prosecutor general
Candidate for the post of Armenia’s Prosecutor General Artur Davtyan made a keynote speech in Armenia’s Parliament on Tuesday.
Armenia’s law-enforcement system cannot remain neutral to the political and social processes and problems in the country, he said.
“The processes that gained impetus due to last year’s constitutional reforms require a fresh approach to the activities of Armenia’s law-enforcement system in general and prosecutor’s office in particular. It means that Armenia’s new Constitution ensures independence of the public prosecutor’s office,” Mr. Davtyan said.
Prosecutor’s office remains a guarantor of protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
“No country can have solid foundations without it, and people can feel protected if, in contacting law-enforcers, they see the law-enforcement agencies are following the principle of equality before the law,” Mr Davtyan said.
According to him, much work has been done. However, much work has to be done yet, along with the development of the state and society. In this context, Mr Davtyan highlighted team work.
Davtyan highlighted the need of increasing public trust through specific steps. “One of the steps will be providing access to the necessary information on cases interesting the society, and raising the agency’s international reputation.”
He added that the system has considerably changed over the recent years, attracting less younger university graduates.
He promised to establish more active ties with universities educating future lawyers, adding that anti-corruption issues will be among top priorities. “Corruption instills distrust of government bodies and law-enforcement agencies,” he added.
Davtyan promised stronger efforts towards prosecuting all corruption-related cases and resolving government agencies and officials’ links to all cases involving corruption risks. “The Prosecutor General’s Office has enough authority to pursue its fight against corruption on a different platform,” he added.
At the end, the would-be prosecutor general thanked the parliamentary factions for meetings, promising to consider their proposals in future.
