Samantha Power’s Genocide remark hints no changes in US foreign policy - analyst
Samantha Power’s recent statement on the Armenian Genocide marks no changes in the United States’ foreign policy, an Armenian political analyst said today, commenting on the remarks delivered by the US ambassador to the United Nations.
“I don’t think it is a policy change; I believe it has to do personally with Samantha Power, as she is a genocide scholar who previously voiced condemnation of the Armenian Genocide. She has personally recognized the Genocide as a crime of genocide. This, probably, is a momentous move, or a gesture to the Armenians ahead of ending tenure,” he commented.
In an article on Tuesday, the Associated Press described the term used by the US envoy as a “taboo for US officials, including President Barack Obama, who have instead talked of mass atrocity and historical tragedy”.
Martirosyan said he treats the statement as a belated move “given especially the fact that all this taking place in the final month of the administration’s tenure.”
The analyst said he doesn’t expect Power to remain in office after Obama’s departure from the White House.
