Kremlin’s double standards evoke anti-Russian sentiments in Armenia - politician
Russia’s weapons sale to Azerbaijan on the one hand and its repeated statements condemning the growing tensions in Ukraine on the other demonstrate that the country is clearly pursuing double standards to which Armenia cannot possibly be indiffernet, according to Tevan Poghosyan, a former opposition lawmaker (Heritage party).
In an interview with Tert.am, the politician expressed his concerns over the country’s failure to respect its commitments of a strategic ally, calling for the Russian authorities to revise and re-evaluate attitudes to avoid anti-Russian sentiments in Armenia.
“Russia sells weapons to Azerbaijan, describing the transaction as just a business and [insisting] that they will continue the sale. Later, however, we hear the Russian president say – in the context of the weapons sale to Ukraine – that anyone selling weapons to a conflicting party contributes to increasing tension. That's nothing more than a policy of double standards. We have agreements with Russia which were never implemented,” he said, criticizing further the recent call for giving the Russian language a special status in Armenia (to give Armenian citizens driving licenses in the country) and the failure to revise the prices of the natural gas supply.
“If Russia is really worried over possible anti-Russians sentiments in Armenia, why don't they re-evaluate their behavior to understand the causes of their wrongful acts and failures and think whether a slight decrease in the natural gas prices against the backdrop of all this would cause Armenian citizens to ‘fall in love’ with Russia. It is in our country’s interest to really notice all this to make Armenia powerful. If actions by any country do not potentially contribute to Armenia's empowerment, we must simply keep away from that country,” Poghosyan added.
